I began my career with the membership department of the Boat Owners Association of the United States (BOAT/U.S.). While at BOAT/U.S., I focused on internal PR and promotions targeted at 35 marine centers designed to increase new member recruitment.
From BOAT/U.S, I joined the events staff at the National Capital Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as the director of the MS Challenge, a 5k road race, and assistant director of a 2 day bike tour.
Following the MS Society, I returned to American University, my alma matter. I served as an Assistant Director of Annual Campaigns, responsible for managing the day to day activities of the University's athletic and library booster groups. It was during my leadership tenure that the athletic booster group, the Eagles Club, experienced a membership increase of over 30%. The Friends of American University Library, the library booster group, saw its membership increase by over 65%.
After American University, I joined the staff at the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) and was promoted three times, the last time to the position of Director of Marketing and Member Services. My accomplishments at SWANA include launching www.SWANAstore.com which grew to over $500,000 in gross receipts and 90% credit card invoicing in less than three years time.
Following a year in the Membership Department at the Advertising Specialty Institute, I became the first Director of Membership, later the Director of Membership and Marketing and was in 2008 named Vice President of Membership and Marketing at the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM).
SHM represents over 7,000 hospitalists, doctors whose primary place of practice is in a hospital setting. At SHM, I supervise a staff of eight FTE’s as well as 4 part time Marketing Assistants (our term for interns). My plate of responsibility includes the Society’s membership program, including relationships with over 40 chapters, as well as the marketing and communications functions. During my first two years at SHM I earned my MBA, with a marketing concentration, from Drexel University.
We’ve accomplished many exciting things at SHM. On the membership side, our achievements include surpassing 7,000 members and 1 million dollars in dues revenue, creating SHM’s first membership modeling program and growing our retention rate to 76% (from the low 60’s).
In terms of SHM’s marketing program, where I’m responsible for the creation and execution of our annual marketing plan, our achievements have been exciting as well. In 2008 we had record attendance at our Annual Meeting and our Leadership Academies continue to sell out. We’ve also expanded our electronic marketing programs with the introduction of search engine optimization initiatives and automated relationship marketing via our CRM solution.
I currently reside in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with my wife Michele. |
